Cotopaxi Volcano (5.897m.a.s.l. / 19.347ft / level II / 50º Inclination)

ascenso-cotopaxiCotopaxi is the most popular mountain in Ecuador and one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. Its cone is perfect and has an almost symmetrical cone that rises from a highland plain of about 3,800 metres (12,500 ft), with a width at its base of about 23 kilometres (14 mi). It has one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world, which starts at the height of 5,000 metres (16,400 ft). It is part of the chain of volcanoes around the Pacific plate known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, located about 28 km (17 mi) south of Quito, Ecuador. It is the second highest summit in the country, reaching a height of 5,897 m (19,347 ft). Cotopaxi is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world.

Many sources claim that Cotopaxi means "Neck of the Moon" in an indigenous language. It was honored as a "Sacred Mountain" by local Andean peoples. It was worshiped as “rain sender”, that served as the guarantor of the land's fertility, and at the same time its summit was revered as a place where gods lived.

DAY 1:

We leave from Quito at 9:00 am, we will make our way into the Cotopaxi National Park and we will arrive to the refuge Jose Ribas located 4800 m.a.s.l.. After lunch, we will wear the gear and go through a glacier training course with the guide before having dinner and resting until midnight.

 DAY 2:

We get up at 12 in the night to get ready in an hour with all the material and make a tea. Our climb to the summit will begin at approximately 1:00 am and will take six hours to reach the top. The return to refuge takes approximately three or four hours. Return to Quito.
