Cayambe Volcano (5.789 m.a.s.l. / 18.993ft / level III / 60º Inclination)

Cayambe Volcano is located in the Cordillera Oriental, a branch of the Ecuadorian Andes. It is located in Pichincha province some 70 km (43 mi) northeast of Quito. It is the third highest mountain in Ecuador.
Cayambe, which has a permanent snow cap, is a Holocene compound volcano which has not erupted in historical times. At 4,690 m (15,387 ft) on its south slope is the highest point in the world crossed by the Equator and the only point on the Equator with snow cover. The volcano is in the Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve.

Cayambe was first scaled by British climber Edward Whymper and his two Italian guides and companions Juan Antonio and Luis Carrel in 1880, and is a favourite of mountain climbers today.

DAY 1.

Departure from Quito/Otavalo at 9 am, we will arrive in private transport up to 4,400 meters. We pick up our backpacks and hike to the refuge at 4,600 meters and after will take a rest and box lunch. We will wearing the gear and go through a glacier training course with a guide before having dinner and resting until midnight. 

DAY 2.

We get up at 12 in the night to get ready in an hour with all the material and make a tea. At midnight we will start climbing to the Summit, that is 5790 m.a.s.l.. To reach the summit one needs seven hours. It is a long journey, beginning at 12:00 at night and arriving at the summit at 6h00 or 7h00 am.

Our arrival at the summit depends on the conditions of the person and the weather conditions. If we arrive, we will be about 20 minutes to enjoy the scenery then return to the refuge, where we will take our equipment and back to Quito.
